SMARTS Steel pans to Steel Band, Grades 4-12| Nick Frank

Originating in Trinidad and Tobago, the steelpan was born from musicians playing instruments such as bamboo pieces, biscuit tins, dustbins, and oil drums. Beating the oil drum led to dents in the metal, and the players discovered that each dent had a different pitch. People (tuners) specialize in the creation of steelpans, and hammer the steel into a desired shape. Creating a unique sound, steelpans are not standardized, and are created in different sizes such as bass pans, rhythm pans, and lead pans. These different sizes make up the steel band, giving it the range similar to an orchestra. In this introductory class, we will be introduced to Jumbie Jam steelpans. We will learn to play the 8 notes it contains and experiment with song creation, thus building up the skillset to play in SMARTS Steel Band. Students must bring their own labeled lunch and drink.

SMARTSoASIS K-12 Summer Workshop 2023 Guidelines

Enrollment

Students can enroll in one workshop per week. Enrollment opens live online May 24 @ 1:00pm. There are 19 workshops with spots for 222 students. Workshops represent 15 hours of instruction and must fill to 50% capacity in order to run. See the Early SMARTS flyer for those workshops. All workshops are free, open to the public, and offered on a first-come, first-served basis to students who have applications on file with SMARTS. Apply here: www.SmartsArtSchool.org/classes.

Schedule

Students should be dropped off no earlier than 9:45 am, and students must be signed out by 3:30 pm. Each workshop will run for one week, Tuesday Friday @ 10:00 - 3:30 pm, which includes a lunch break and an all group arts activity. Students must be picked up no later than 4:00 pm.

Bring Your Own Lunch & Drink

Students will need to bring their own labeled lunch and drink daily. Please do not pack for your child any food items containing peanuts, peanut butter, or tree nuts to accommodate students with severe allergies. Lunch occurs in 2 groups between 11:30-1:30pm.

Family Workshops

Limited to two members per household. Grades K-1 students must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, grandparent or approved adult. Grades 2-12 can take family workshops solo, or with a parent, grandparent, guardian, or older sibling.

Grade Level Eligibility

In order to qualify for Grade K workshops, students must have already completed Kindergarten. Students not yet in Kindergarten can enroll in Early SMARTS Workshops. See the Early SMARTS flyer for those schedules. For all students, they are considered the grade level they just completed in the 2022-2023 school year when enrolling in a SMARTS Summer Workshop.

Attendance

Workshop participants must have perfect attendance because of the immersive learning experience. Attendance all four days of the workshop is mandatory. Please do not enroll in a workshop if you cannot attend all four days. Students who are more than 20 minutes late will not be permitted in their workshop that day.

Masks, Health, and Safety

Face masks are optional at this time, but this may change at any point should cases rise again.
